Domain names are important, we use them to search for our favorite websites, and we also bookmark them in our search browsers. On several occasions, we even write and store them just in case something goes wrong with our machine or we forget the website's domain name.
Moving on, knowing a domain's IP address is necessary, we will need this information if we want to know details about the domain. But first, let's find out more about what an IP address is.
An IP address is what sets one domain apart from another, and every domain is assigned a unique IP address. An IP (Internet Protocol) is a unique addressing system used to identify all machines that are using the internet. When you connect to the internet from any device; mobile phone, tablet, laptop, computer, etc. you are identified by an IP address, and without a unique addressing system operating and managing the internet would be practically impossible.
Think about living in an area where there are no house numbers, no signs, no street numbers, or names. It would be difficult to find out where a person lives.
An IP address comprises of four sets of numbers. Each of which contains one to three numbers. A single dot '.' Separates each set of numbers. Each of the four numbers can range from 0 to 255. A sample IP address can look like 48.178.183.456. This simple-looking set of numbers is the key that empowers a user to send and receive data from other websites. It is this set of numbers that ensure that we reach the correct website.
The common set of IP addresses that were first installed in 1983 and are known as the IPV4 and the one explained are fast running out. To handle the future domains addressing IPV6 has been launched and both versions are already in use.
